Joseph Smith: Prophet of the Restoration

Did you know that you can watch the film about Joseph Smith online, right now?

It was originally only presented at the theatre in Temple Square and in temples' visitors' centers, but today you can watch it from your own computer!

From the church website:

"The original 2005 version depicts events in the life of Joseph Smith that help explain the Church's belief in modern prophets and Joseph Smith's role in restoring the Church of Jesus Christ to the earth.
The new version stays true to that original purpose but uses reedited footage from the original film as well as some new footage to create a product that is more understandable for the wider Internet audience. About 40 percent of the film is new material.
The revised Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration is available online at mormonchannel.org/Joseph"

Some of you may know that I took several editing classes from the editors of this film, and worked under them at the Church's Motion Picture Studio in Provo. As a final project for my Advanced Avid Class, we were asked to cut our own "trailers" for this film.  It was a really great experience to watch the film a handful of times and feel the Spirit every time I worked on it.

I hope you get a chance to watch the new version!

film log, Jan-Mar 2011

Not a huge fan of this male lead, but he is supposed to be significantly older than her, so I guess that works for the story!

I have been wanting to watch this ever since I missed my chance at BYU's International Cinema.
It is a British film.  I had a hard time understanding the little boy in the beginning with his thick Scottish accent. Emily Mortimer {from Disney's The Kid!} and Gerald Butler.  It is so sad in some parts, but worth watching!  PG-13 for language.

A film about Banksy, the mysterious UK graffiti artist.  This crazy French guy from LA starts filming a bunch of other graffiti artists and finds himself with a connection to film a doc about Banksy.  When I say crazy, I mean far beyond lunatic.  He thinks he is a filmmaker, but really just goes around filming everything compulsively, has no organization, and can't form a concrete story from his hundreds of tapes.  Banksy takes over the doc, and this film is the end result.  Some writers are convinced the whole film is a hoax.  What is NOT a hoax is the prank he pulls at Disneyland - I was really offended when I saw what he did, but I still found the film to be unlike any other story I've ever experienced.
Rated R for language.

I've already mentioned Funny Face, and I watched The Audrey Hepburn Story yesterday.
It caused me to go dress shopping.  Let's just say I did not come home empty handed. That's saying a lot considering my shopping impulses are rare.  {Note to self:  when saving money, do not watch vintage films that contain cute vintage clothing.}

1966, two surfers travel to Africa to take on the waves.
The only thing you hear is the narrator and 60s tunes in the background.
His commentary is pretty funny, though slightly racist and ignorant when speaking of the natives' first ever encounter with surfing.  I was also quite amused by his references to how expensive Africa was at the time, and it blew my mind at how enormously inflation has skyrocketed through the decades.  The narrator was so baffled at the pricey $1 coffee and $1/gallon gas prices in Africa.  We would all love a little bit of that, wouldn't we?

take the balboa ferry, fun is waiting for you on the other side

This weekend was partially spent on the Island. We love the Island!  I took my camera along.  Some pictures are on my photography blog and the rest {of the good ones} are in this post.

Friday.

Mom, Emily, and I met up with our cousin Heather and her fiancĂ© Austin!
They just got engaged last week and will get married in July!  I am excited.

See? This is my excited face!

We took the ferry across for some great and cheap tacos at Great Mex. {That name sounds so weird, we always want to call it something else!}

Saturday was spent with the Saunders!

Brady's face reads How come your phone does not swipe like my mom's phone?

Riding the ferry with Carter and his new bulldog friend.

We rented a sailboat for an hour for Dad's Birthday!  The rental place did not let all of us on the boat at once, so we went in shifts.

The boys both steered the boat!
I will post videos soon...

The whole crew:

Our sad attempt at squishing four people into a photobooth:

I love Balboa.

I will add more photos tomorrow!

funny face

This has been an Audrey Hepburn month.

For my birthday, the Saunders gave me this charmingly illustrated storybook about Audrey's life:

And I have been skimming through many of Audrey's helpful quotes on "How to be Lovely" that I've had since November:

I just got this today from Heather as a belated birthday gift!

And my sister and I happened to plan to watch Funny Face this evening, so it was an Audrey Hepburn day!

I love seeing a little bit of Audrey's awkwardness in this film, because it reassured me that even the most beautiful girls are sometimes awkward, so my occasional awkwardness must be okay too.. though Audrey can somehow still be graceful in her awkwardness, and that is far more than I can say for myself -  but at least it's wishful thinking!

happy birthday dad!

Today is my Dad's birthday!

Happy Birthday to the coolest Dad.

I would always follow him around when I was little -

He is there for my sister and my big days in our lives!
Such as our baptisms!  He baptized us.  How special is that?

He has no sons + I wanted to do everything he did when I was little=  part of the reason why I am slightly tom boyish today

and has raised me to be a Laker/basketball-philiac

He is a really fun great uncle!

teaching the Saunders kids how to fly his kites

He works really hard, and looks cool doing it.

While watching a basketball tournament in Venice Beach - some other spectators thought he was a plain clothed cop!

And if you know my Dad, then you know how crazy and spontaneous he can be!

They decided to dress up to a birthday party that wasn't even a costume party.  Yes, you read that correctly.

For those of you who know about the legendary "Sun Dried Tomatoes" story from Lake Powell, you may not know that I actually snapped a shot of this crazy moment:

{the look on Grammy and Roger's faces!!}

And who could forget this?

Thanks for always being so full of life,  encouragement, and being such a great example of hard work and service!

We love you!

witty quotes

I never get tired of little clever and witty quotes that make me want to grab life by the horns and make every day an adventure.

YES!

This is SO true:

I really love this:

and the best above them all:

I have neglected my photography blog.
I am trying to be better because I have hundreds of photos to work on, therefore I have dozens that should be posted already.

My apologies.

Take a look at the coolest shop I waltzed through in Italy,  I mean New York.

why I love running at the rose bowl

My past run around the Rose Bowl was by far my favorite run, and my time and mileage had nothing to do with it.

A few months ago when I was running there I saw the most beautiful dark green Ford Model A Victoria.  It was driven by the sweetest old man and his little wife, and they looked like they were having the most peaceful and blissful afternoon, smiling and looking at the beautiful Pasadena surroundings with their windows down.  I felt like I was transported back to the 30s or 40s for a moment... They drove by me three times as I ran around the bowl and every time I smiled.
I remember thinking, "When I am old, I want to do that with my husband."

On Friday I saw the car again!  I became very excited when I recognized it from a distance, and I waited to see the same little wrinkled faces grinning back at me as it came closer-  but the sight was a little different.  The little old lady was in the back seat with her dog in her lap, and a younger man was her chauffeur.  Maybe it was her son or son-in-law...  I only saw them drive by once, and during the rest of my run I kept wondering where the old man was.

I run by a lot different people -
anything from ladies with strollers, guys on bikes {well, they speed by me},  families with dogs, really fit girls who have probably been running all their life,  to older people who can probably run ten miles more than I can.  I love catching a glimpse at other people's lives.  As I run past them/they run past me, I wonder - where do they live?  where else do they run?  what do they do for a living? {I ask that a lot considering the time of day I go running there} and what makes them happy?

My run was also memorable thanks to:
seeing a little girl shrieking with glee and laughing in her stroller as her dad ever-so-heroically pushed her swiftly along the path - what a champ, he was probably so tired from running.

A lady wearing a Philippe's shirt - which reminded me that in all my years of eating there I deserve to buy one!

A dark green Karmann Ghia parked at the golf course... ahhh!

And another car moment -  you know me and my cars -
I noticed a sleek black BMW Z4 cruising my way with the top down.
I naturally wanted to see who was driving it, so I casually {HA- casually...} turned my head to see as they went by and it happened to be two younger guys
They noticed my *subtle* glance...
and the passenger blew me a kiss.

If that's not enough motivation to keep running, I don't know what is.

"SO... Does your school really kick you out for ____? "

I've been asked this question several times in the past few weeks.

Rewind to when ESPN Radio did a 2 hour segment solely on the specifics of the Honor Code, and asked callers which of the nine rules they would do away with and keep if they had the choice:

Here are the nine:

1.  Be Honest
2.  Live a chaste and virtuous life
3.  Obey the law and all campus policies
4.  Use clean language
5.  Respect others
6.  Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
7.  Participate regularly in church services
8.  Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
9.  Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code

The radio host A Martinez was far more respectful than the previous host - who was so classless and ignorant I won't take the time to write about his far-fetched theories of "who squealed on Davies."
I actually saw Martinez broadcasting live at the ESPN Zone at LA Live during this story, and thanks to the prodding of my Dad I got enough courage to knock on the door and ask the other guys in the booth if Martinez wanted any clarification on the Honor Code {he kept asking "What do they mean by Dress and Grooming Standards?"} because I am a BYU Alumni. "I don't want to be on the radio or anything, but he can ask me anything he wants if any part of the Honor Code doesn't make sense to him."  The guy said, "Cool thanks.  He's actually just finishing the story and going on to talk about Barry Bonds."
I was partially relieved.  I don't know how I could have handled a headstrong and slightly intimidating sports radio host...

Since the world of sports and anyone who keeps up with the daily buzz have discovered the specifics of my alma mater's honor code - conversations have been very different when people discover where I earned my film degree.

I was working as a stills photographer on set of a commercial.  I sat down to lunch next to the 2nd AD {Assistant to the Assistant Director}, the sound guy, and another PA {production assistant}.
2nd AD:  So, did you go to film school?
Me:  Yes, I just graduated actually!
2nd AD:  From where?
Me:  BYU, in Utah.
Sound guy:  Ahhh man!  Are you serious?  So all that controversy... is it true that all those students don't have sex??  How is that possible?!
simultaneously with the 2nd AD: So you're Mormon?
Me: Yes, I'm Mormon.
2nd AD: So did Davies really get kicked out for having sex with his girlfriend?
Me:  The school didn't give an official statement, but that's what the rumor is.
Sound guy:  So can you get kicked out for drinking coffee??  That's ridiculous!
Me:  No, no, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get kicked out of school for drinking coffee.  Every situation is handled differently.
Sound guy:  Same thing happened to Unga, right? {he trails off as I am talking to the 2nd AD about how yes, most kids do actually follow the honor code.}  I know some Mormons,  they are really nice.

{I think it funny that the sound guy was speaking about "the Mormons" to me as if I was not one.  Just sounded funny how he kept saying "they."}

The second occasion occurred last night at The Stand in Westwood, just up the street from the Temple.
I was with my sister and our friend Taylor Hoopes after doing baptisms.
The UCLA v. Michigan State game was on all 4 screens, and the guy at the counter {with a prominent mustache} was very involved with the Bruins' soon to be win.  After the game ended I asked if he could change it to the Gonzaga v. St John's game
Hill: "So I can see who BYU will be playing in the next round!"
Mustache Man: "Yea, for sure."  He changed it and came over by our table and asked,  "Did you go to BYU?"
H: "Yes I just graduated from there!"
MM: "So, the Honor Code... it's really that strict?  Can you get kicked out for drinking coffee??"  {again, everyone is so concerned about life without coffee!}
H: "Haha, no..."
{the conversation was similar to the previous about Brandon Davies}
MM: "And how can the school regulate everyone?  I mean there is no way that they can tell if you're having sex or not.."
H:"No it's true, they can't regulate everyone, but part of it is being honest and there is an Honor Code Office that deals with every case individually."
MM: "Huh."
H: "It's an awesome school, I really enjoyed it."
MM: "No yea, I've heard great things about it.  Have you been to the Hawaii campus?"

This "controversy"  has re-introduced me to the kind of conversations I used to have at the lunch tables in high school.  I have always enjoyed talking about my lifestyle and beliefs because luckily everyone who speaks to me is considerably respectful, and a lot of times in awe that there are people in the world that abstain from alcohol and sex outside of marriage.

When the whole Davies upset happened I honestly liked the fact that ESPN talked about it for as long and in such detail as they did. This has been a great way for the world to discover how we are different.  Dad said this is great publicity!  Parents are probably so thrilled to know that there is a school out there where their kids can both live wholesome lives AND be athletically successful.
BYU will be remembered for staying true to their own rules instead of waiting until the end of the tournament to suspend Davies.  And even better, the teammates have been loving and forgiving, which I personally would have had a really hard time doing if I was in their shoes.  He is traveling with the team. Tomorrow he will be on the bench in Denver watching his boys take on the Zag's.

Proud to be a Cougar.

need motivation? / nike

"My Best Enemy"

this is just plain funny

a great homage to OK Go's treadmill music video

What motivates me to run?

1. Gorgeous sights {Golden hour at the Rose Bowl or midday at the beach}
2. I love feeling sore and beat after a long run!
3. My Nike+ . I think I am going to try out the speed feature today. The distance feature doesn't choose your music speed, and I'm thinking I need to mix things up a bit.
4. I just found out today that I am six pounds away from what I weighed in high school. There were days in college when I thought I'd never see a size 8 jeans again. Now size 6 seems so much closer!

What motivates you to run/be active?

the wonders of technology

Sometimes I have days where I wish technology never existed- which sounds harsh, and a bit ironic considering what I do in my profession.   I just dread the thought of the next generation walking around with their heads down looking at their iPad 7's, or looking something like the humans in WALL-E.

But then there are days when I think, "Heavenly Father has truly inspired these innovative people to create amazing gadgets that help people in so many ways!!"  Such as this:

Japan has a quake warning system that informs citizens via tv, radio, and cellphones when the first wave is detected from the seismic center and predicts the magnitude of the second and much stronger wave.  Railways and other forms of public transportation were shut down automatically, saving thousands of people.  Unfortunately this system is more helpful for those residing farther from the seismic center, such as those in Tokyo.   Read this article  about how this warning system gave these people anywhere from thirty seconds to a minute warning before the quake hit.

It is amazing to say that we have the capability of knowing an earthquake is coming before it happens, even if it is only a minute ahead.  Wouldn't it be so amazing if this technology could advance and warn  people closer to the seismic center an hour, or a day ahead?

  2. To Apparate.  There are so many places to see and loved ones who live far from me, that I am constantly wishing I could just POOF!  and be at whichever desired location. {If you don't know what Apparate means... how did you find my blog, you Muggle??}
  3. To have a dog, preferably a golden retriever, that remained a puppy forever.

Q:  What do you think of when you hear the word "yellow"?
I think of a sunny kitchen, lemon bars, a gingham sun dress {that I don't own, but would love to make!}, and Coldplay

1. My box of journals
2.  My box of letters

"what makes you happy?" list #2 - stacy bateman

Stacy Bateman was in my home ward while I was in high school. She taught my Sunday School class and substituted my Seminary a few times.   She also choreographed Bye Bye Birdie the summer of 2006. She and her husband and children have since moved to Orange County and then Wisconsin, but I still feel like she is not very far to seek her advice or hear her great stories about her kiddos thanks to facebook and blogger. This woman is full of inspiration!  She is fun, creative, hardworking, strong, and an amazing example of being a great mother and wife.

Here are ten things that make her happy:

1. Pancakes
2.  Ice Cream Parties & Taco Night
3. Holidays/parties w/ lots of kiddos (think Dr. seuss & Valentine's day)
4. Dancing (choreography, coaching, performing, competing, etc.)
5. Salsa (REAL, NOT manufactured.  I'm a snob.)
6.  Road Trips
7.  Museums (children's, art, science, etc.)
8.  Being involved (pto, daisies, parent council, coaching, etc.)
9. Taking pics/blogging
10.  Being in love

High School Sweethearts.
Love it!

Thanks for sharing Stacy!

spring cleaning

Does your laptop or desktop run slower than normal?
It may be because you are running low on memory.
I have known for too many months now that my laptop has needed a MAJOR cleaning.
I went through ALL of my folders this morning and freed up about 40GB of space.

"What is it that has been taking up that space?" you may ask.
I have a confession:
I am a HUGE hoarder when it comes to pictures I find online.
Beautiful photographs, clever graphic designs, a little dose of fashion {surprised? me too} and witty things from stumble upon.
I have a MAD addiction to taking screen shots.  These days it seems to be anything humorous I see my friends writing on fbook that I want to save forever.

I can't help but share a handful of these finds while browsing through the nooks and crannies of my mac:

Let's be honest here while I am admitting my guilty pleasures, I stalk John Mayer on his Tumblr.  The man is a constant source for amazingly worded speculations and personal discoveries that many of us have experienced but haven't bothered to vocalize or even form into a concrete thought.

When talking about regrets or looking at the past -

This is SO true! I never realized this! :

Ryan, one of the funniest and most down-to-earth people I know:

OH Stumble Upon, how you have changed my artistic viewing experiences online forever:

And one last quote from Mr. Mayer:

{This makes even more sense if you know that he is a "synesthetic" = he sees sounds as colors. Trippy, isn't it?}
